Book Review: Just My Luck by Adele Parks

“It’s the stuff dreams are made of – a lottery win so big, it changes everything.”

Published in 2020, Just My Luck by Adele Parks follows Lexi and Jake who, for fifteen years, have played the same six numbers with their friends, the Pearsons and the Heathcotes. Over dinner parties, fish & chip suppers and summer barbecues, they’ve discussed the important stuff – the kids, marriages, jobs and houses – and they’ve laughed off their disappointment when they failed to win anything more than a tenner.

But then, one Saturday night, the unthinkable happens. There’s a rift in the group. Someone doesn’t tell the truth. And soon after, six numbers come up which change everything forever. Lexi and Jake have a ticket worth £18 million. And their friends are determined to claim a share of it.

Rating:

I was really hesitant about this book at the start as it’s not the most exciting premise. And as I followed a number of characters argue about their lottery syndicate, I wondered if this was going to be all there was to it.

Yet I still found myself completely invested in their story. Parks is such a great writer that I couldn’t tear my eyes away from their drama. The characters are strongly written, the conversations feels very genuine, and then twists start to roll out to hype up the suspense even more.

I usually don’t enjoy such domestic thrillers, but Parks always manages to keep me interested!
