Lip Service is BBC Three’s new seductive relationship drama following the lives of a group of twenty-something lesbians. As it describes itself, “Sex, lies and true love in modern Scotland.” And from the picture alone, why would you not want to watch it?
The first episode aired yesterday, 12th October 2010, introducing us to the main cast of the series (of which 90% are lesbians). Frankie (Ruta Gedmintas) returns to Glasgow due to the death of a relative, and is reunited with her old friends and ex-girlfriend Cat (Laura Fraser) whom Frankie left heart-broken two years before.
The Sun reported that: “The BBC’s new lesbian drama Lip Service shocked fans” and that “fans complained that the show was gratuitous with a series of unnecessary sex scenes.”
And if it couldn’t get any worse: “After watching the raunchy show, fans dismissed the drama and branded it “glamourised soft porn”.”
However, the show was advertised as a lesbian drama so it was obvious to expect nothing more from a program portraying the sex lives of a group of women. It was in no way offensive and the sex scenes were in no more detail than any heterosexual one would be. This is where the evolution of TV has reached today, and people need to start getting used to it.
As a reader of The Sun said: “If you don’t like it, bloody turn over.”
Next weeks episode sees Frankie follow a lead that might unravel the mystery of her past, Cat gets a second chance when she runs into policewoman Sam and Tess makes a fool of herself on live television, making it clear that Lou is nowhere near ready to go public with their relationship.
Personally, I’m quite looking forward to my next installment of “soft porn” on a Tuesday evening.
