Film Review: Tangled

Directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard and the 50th Disney animated feature film, Tangled is loosely based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale as it follows the magically long-haired Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore) who has spent her entire life hidden away in a mysterious tower. But when a runaway thief, Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi), stumbles upon her, Rapunzel strikes a deal with the handsome thief as the unlikely duo set off on an action-packed escapade, as she discovers the world for the first time.

Disney never really lost it, but Tangled certainly saw them return to top form.

It has everything that I loved about the original Disney films which I grew up watching. It’s a classic fairytale with empowering characters, a romance you strive for, a few darker moments to add some complexity, and a couple of animal pals who inject a lot of comedy without having to say a word. And, of course, there’s a powerful soundtrack with a standout ballad, and the animation is absolutely beautiful. The detail of Rapunzel’s hair is fantastic, but I also love how the colours of the flowers and lanterns really brighten up your screen.

Above all, Tangled is absolutely hilarious. It has the type of humour that many young viewers won’t catch on to until they’re much older, but that makes it all the more fun for adult viewers.
