In a Nutshell:
A not-so-typical rom-com about a girl who doesn’t believe in love and the guy that falls in love with her.
Tagline:
“This is a story of boy meets girl… But I must warn you, this is not a love story.”
Quotes:
‘Coincidence, that’s all anything ever is, nothing more than coincidence…Tom had finally learnt that there are no miracles, there is no such thing as fate, nothing is meant to be. He knew; he was sure of it now.’
Tom: ‘What happens if you fall in love?’
Summer: ‘Well, you don’t believe that, do you?’
Tom: ‘It’s love. It’s not Santa Claus.’
Tom: ‘I need to know that you’re not going to wake up in the morning and feel differently.’
Summer: ‘I can’t give you that. Nobody can.’
Plot:
For Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) it was love at first sight when he meets Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel) on her first day at work.
Bonding over their love of The Smiths, a drunken karaoke night later leads to sly kisses in the copy room and sex in the shower.
At first, it appears that Tom and Summer are perfect for each other, but Summer doesn’t believe in relationships, and Tom has already fallen in love…
Skipping back and forth through the tribulations of their relationship, we see Tom go from delirious heights to depressing lows, as he examines where it all started to go wrong.
One minute he bursts into spontaneous song in the park, the next, he’s seeking advice on women from his adolescent sister Rachel (Chloë Grace Moretz), who consoles him with vodka in times of need.
As the 500th day approaches, is Summer ready to commit? Or is Tom still kidding himself with the torment of love and fate?
