Directed by Cary Fukunaga and based on Charlotte Brontë‘s 1847 novel of the same name, Jane Eyre follows 18-year-old Jane Eyre (Mia Wasikowska) who, after being shipped off to a stark boarding school, later finds work as a governess for the ward of Edward Fairfax Rochester (Michael Fassbender), master of Thornfield Hall. As she begins to soften the heart of her employer, Jane soon discovers a scandalous secret and takes flight.
Rating:
An elegant and atmospheric adaptation of a literary classic. The soundtrack and score are beautiful, as is the periodic reconstruction, making the whole aesthetic of this film come together brilliantly.
Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender are the reason that this film works so well, both giving excellent performances. The two have a strong chemistry that most will find engaging and deliver their portrayals of Bronte’s characters perfectly.
What I loved about this film was the intensity that this film built up, making this romantic melodrama quite dark in places and therefore very atmospheric, with an ending that really made me tear up.
