First Full Length Trailer for ‘The Iron Lady’ Starring Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher

(Written for BritScene)

The Iron Lady, a biographical film with Meryl Streep starring as former and controversial British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, has this week been given an official trailer.

The film looks at the life of Thatcher, and the price that is paid for power, as the Prime Minister in London in the 1980’s, who came from nowhere, smashing through the barriers of gender and class, to make her voice heard in a male dominated world. Beginning in 2008, with an elderly Thatcher preparing breakfast for her husband Denis, the film will be narrated through a series of flashbacks, including the 17 days leading up to the Falklands War in 1982.

The trailer gives us a better sense of what the movie is doing, and shows us just how well Streep fits into her role as the strong-minded, British prime minister. Reunited with director Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia!), she’s sure to be receiving an award or two for this universal portrayal, which will surely include her 17th Academy Award nomination.

With The Weinstein Company on board as well, there is a King’s Speech style scene in the trailer where Thatcher needs to find her authoritative voice. This can either mean that The Iron Lady will be just as impressive and creative as Colin Firth‘s lead in The King’s Speech, or that we won’t be seeing anything new at all. We doubt it’s the latter though, and I’m sure you will agree when you watch the trailer below for yourself.

The Iron Lady also stars Jim Broadbent as Denis Thatcher, Anthony Head as Geoffrey Howe, Richard E. Grant, Harry Lloyd, and Olivia Colman.

It will open for an awards-qualifying run in New York and Los Angeles on 30th December, and is then set to be fully released on 13th January, 2012.
