BBC Crime Drama ‘Luther’ Looks Set For The Big Screen

We have already had the good news that the third series of the hit BBC psychological crime drama, Luther has been commissioned. Now after comments by Luther creator Neil Cross it is looking more and more likely that that a big screen adaptation is also on the way.

We mentioned in October that lead star Idris Elba had hinted at the making of a movie, and it was only a matter of time before the studios came calling.

However, it’s not all good news. Whilst the third series has already begun filming, Cross also hinted that it will probably be its last. “Idris (Elba) is a busy man,” he told Variety this week.

But it probably won’t be the last time we see him as the unorthodox Detective Chief Inspector, as Cross added that, “There’s a strong possibility there will be a ‘Luther’ movie in the near future.”

Elba also commented to BBC’s Newsbeat earlier this year that he would like to make a film version of the series. “Ultimately I’d like to see Luther on the silver screen,” he said. “I think it’s got the scope to do something like that. The audience really wanted to see more episodes but I don’t think that’s the way to go personally.”

BBC America has shown both the first six-episode series of Luther and the shorter four-episode second series over the last year. The third series will be on our screens in late 2012/early 2013, and we will keep you up to date on this movie adaptation as soon as we hear more.
