With filming now underway for The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, this week we have the first collection of set photos to be leaked out, which includes a first look at new tributes Finnick Odair, Mags, Gloss, Beetee, and Enobaria, who will be joining Katniss and Peeta in the second adaptation based on Suzanne Collins acclaimed Hunger Games trilogy of novels.
Picking up straight after the first film, set in a dystopian future in a world called Panem, the Capitol are not happy with District 12 tributes Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) who have returned home after surviving an annual televised game where teenagers are forced to fight to the death, after breaking the rules which permitted them both to win. The couple must now prepare for the Quarter Quell, an extreme edition of the Hunger Games held every 25 years, which will involve some sort of twist to make the games even more disastrous and difficult to compete in.
The new photos from the set don’t particularly show anything revelatory, but as well as seeing Lawrence and Hutcherson reunite, we get to meet some of the sequel’s new characters.
These characters include Sam Claflin as Finnick Odair, all round heart-throb and Victor from District 4 known for winning the 65th Hunger Games at the age of 14:
Jeffrey Wright as Beetee, a tribute from District 3 with an expertise in electronics and wiring.
Alan Ritchson as Gloss, a District 1 tribute.
Lynn Cohen as Mags, an elderly District 4 tribute alongside Finnick.
Meta Golding as Enobaria, a District 2 tribute who became famous for the act of ripping a tribute’s throat out with her teeth.
It’s exciting to see how the film is shaping up, and the character’s all look very suitable for their roles. Mags, especially, is exactly how I pictured her when reading the book, so hopefully we can be in for as good of an adaptation as Gary Ross gave us with the first film.
Other new faces set to be joining the original cast include Amanda Plummer as Wiress, Jena Malone as Johanna Mason, Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee, Maria Howell as Seeder, Stephanie Leigh Schlund as Cashmere, Bruno Gunn as Brutus, Patrick St. Esprit as Thread, and E. Roger Mitchell as Chaff, whilst Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones, Donald Sutherland, Lenny Kravitz, and Willow Shields will all be reprising their roles from the first film.
Written by Oscar-winners Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) and Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) and directed by Francis Lawrence (Water for Elephants), The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be released in the UK on 22nd November, 2013.
