(Written for Lost In The Multiplex)
This week we have the first look at Park Chan-wook’s English-language debut, Stoker, which has its first US and a UK trailer.
With a pretty interesting leading trio, the film tells the story of a young girl, India (Mia Wasikowska), whose Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode) comes to live with her and her unstable mother Evelyn (Nicole Kidman) after her father dies in a car accident.
Soon after his arrival, India comes to suspect this mysterious but charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.
The new trailers both make the plot seem more chilling and a little creepier then it originally sounds, even if already unsettling, and in places looks more like a dark horror than a dramatic thriller. This blur of genres doesn’t do it for me, but if you’re a fan of Can-wook’s Oldboy there’s certainly the promise of more strong performances here at least.
Also starring Jacki Weaver, Dermot Mulroney, Lucas Till, and Alden Ehrenreich, the film will be released on 1st March, 2013.
