Guillermo del Toro and Paul Williams To Make Pan’s Labyrinth Sing

Guillermo del Toro and Paul Williams have teamed up to make a staged musical production of Pan’s Labyrinth, it has been reported this week.

Pan’s Labyrinth, directed by Del Toro and originally released in 2006, is a Spanish-language fantasy horror/drama that follows a young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer who escapes into an eerie but captivating world of magic and mythical creatures.

Del Toro, director of other films including the Hellboy franchise, Blade II and The Devil’s Backbone, is a big fan of Williams’ work, who if you didn’t already know is an Academy Award-winning composer, and the man behind all of the classic songs in The Muppet Movie and Phantom of the Paradise.

The two will now be working on this exciting musical project together, something that Del Toro has already been working on for years, for which Williams will write the lyrics and Gustavo Santoallala is writing the music for.

If you’ve seen the Pan’s Labyrinth film then you are probably just as excited about this as I am, as it is one of my favourite fantasy films and one that will always have a big impact when watching. If you haven’t seen this classic, you must put it on your to-watch list straight away, as a musical adaptation of Del Toro’s work sounds extremely promising.

Since the producers are London-based it’s presumed that the musical will have its premiere in London, but we don’t yet know how far out we are from an actual production.
