The BAFTAs 2014 – Nominations, Predictions & Winners

With the annual BAFTAs airing on BBC One later this evening, here’s a list of the nominations, my predictions and hopes for the ceremony, and I will update the post tomorrow with the winners of this year’s awards.

1. BEST FILM

Predictions: Les Misérables

WINNER: Argo

2. OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM
– Anna Karenina
– The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
– Les Miserables
– Seven Psychopaths
– Skyfall

Predictions: Les Misérables, again

WINNER: Skyfall

3. LEADING ACTOR
– Ben Affleck – Argo
– Bradley Cooper – Silver Linings Playbook
– Daniel Day-Lewis – Lincoln
– Hugh Jackman – Les Miserables
– Joaquin Phoenix – The Master

Predictions: Hugh Jackman, though Daniel Day-Lewis has just as much chance of winning this one

WINNER: DDL

4. LEADING ACTRESS
– Jessica Chastain – Zero Dark Thirty
– Marion Cotillard – Rust and Bone
– Jennifer Lawrence – Silver Linings Playbook
– Dame Helen Mirren – Hitchcock
– Emmanuelle Riva – Amour

Predictions: I’d like Jennifer Lawrence to win this one but unsure who will

WINNER: Emmanuelle Riva

5. SUPPORTING ACTOR
– Alan Arkin – Argo
– Javier Bardem – Skyfall
– Philip Seymour Hoffman – The Master
– Tommy Lee Jones – Lincoln
– Christoph Waltz – Django Unchained

Predictions: Christoph Waltz all the way

WINNER: Christoph Waltz

6. SUPPORTING ACTRESS
– Amy Adams – The Master
– Dame Judi Dench – Skyfall
– Sally Field – Lincoln
– Anne Hathaway – Les Miserables
– Helen Hunt – The Sessions

Predictions: Anne Hathaway, for sure

WINNER: Anne Hathaway

7. DIRECTOR
– Ben Affleck – Argo
– Kathryn Bigelow – Zero Dark Thirty
– Michael Haneke – Amour
– Ang Lee – Life of Pi
– Quentin Tarantino – Django Unchained

Predictions: It’s a toss up between Affleck and Tarantino for me, but I think Django was the better film all around

WINNER: Ben Affleck

8. ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
– Amour – Michael Haneke
– Django Unchained – Quentin Tarantino
– The Master – Paul Thomas Anderson
– Moonrise Kingdom – Wes Anderson, Roman Coppola
– Zero Dark Thirty – Mark Boal

Predictions: Tarantino, but I would love for Moonrise Kingdom to win it

WINNER: Tarantino for Django Unchained

9. ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
– Argo – Chris Terrio
– Beasts of the Southern Wild – Lucy Alibar, Benh Zeitlin
– Life of Pi – David Magee
– Lincoln – Tony Kushner
– Silver Linings Playbook – David O Russell

Predictions: I’d like for O Russell or Alibar/Zeitlin to win, but I have a feeling it will be one of the others

WINNER: O Russell for Silver Linings Playbook

10. OUTSTANDING DEBUT BY A BRITISH WRITER, DIRECTOR OR PRODUCER
– James Bobin (director) – The Muppets
– Dexter Fletcher (director/writer) and Danny King (writer) – Wild Bill
– Tina Gharavi (director/writer) – I Am Nasrine
– Bart Layton (director) and Dmitri Doganis (producer) – The Imposter
– David Morris (director) and Jaqui Morris (director/producer) – McCullin

Predictions: Not sure on this one, I’ll take my guess with Layton/Doganis

WINNER: Layton/Doganis

11. ANIMATED FILM
– Brave
– Frankenweenie
– Paranorman

Predictions: Paranorman

WINNER: Brave

12. DOCUMENTARY
– The Imposter
– Marley
– McCullin
– Searching for Sugarman
– West of Memphis

Predictions: Not seen any of them

WINNER: Searching for Sugarman

13. FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
– Amour
– Headhunters
– The Hunt
– Rust and Bone
– Untouchable

Predictions: I’d like Rust and Bone to win this but I think it’s one for Amour, as much as I didn’t like it.

WINNER: Amour

14. CINEMATOGRAPHY
– Anna Karenina
– Les Miserables
– Life of Pi
– Lincoln
– Skyfall

Predictions: Tough one. Anna Karenina was beatiful and I think Wright deserves the award for the risk he took, but Hooper’s Les Mis had stunning camera work and Life Of Pi was just a marvel to watch. I’d be happy with any of them to win it.

15. COSTUME DESIGN

– Snow White and the Huntsman

Predictions: A toss up between Les Mis and Anna Karenina again for me

WINNER: Anna Karenina

16. EDITING

Predictions: I couldn’t even take a plausible guess with this one

WINNER: Argo

17. MAKE UP AND HAIR
– Anna Karenina
– Hitchcock
– The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
– Les Miserables
– Lincoln

Predictions: The Hobbit, surely

WINNER: Les Mis

18. ORIGINAL MUSIC

Predictions: Skyfall

19. PRODUCTION DESIGN

– Les Miserables

Predictions: Another toss up between the first three for me

WINNER: Les Mis

20. SOUND

Predictions: Les Mis, obviously.

21. SPECIAL VISUAL EFFECTS

Predictions: Life Of Pi, purely for the CGI tiger

WINNER: Life Of Pi

22. SHORT ANIMATION

Predictions: Haven’t seen any of them

WINNER: The Making of Longbird

23. SHORT FILM
– The Curse
– Good Night

– The Voorman Problem

Predictions: Haven’t seen any of them

WINNER: Swimmer

24. RISING STAR (public vote)
– Elizabeth Olsen
– Andrea Riseborough
– Suraj Sharma
– Juno Temple
– Alicia Vikander

Predictions: I hope for this to go Elizabeth Olsen, although I have really enjoyed Andrea Riseborough’s roles over the past couple of years as well

WINNER: Juno Temple

  1. It will be interesting to see the outcome of this. I was surprised The Hobbit wasn’t nominated for more awards but happy to see Seven Psychopaths up there. I think Les Mis should take the most awards and well deserved as well.
