Film Review: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the sequel to the reboot that sees the return of the web-slinging superhero Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). This time, Peter learns that being Spider-Man comes at a price, as only he can protect his fellow New Yorkers, most importantly girlfriend Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone), from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realise that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

With 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, we knew that the reboot was heading in the right direction. And that’s because Tobey Maguire was nowhere in sight. But seriously… Marc Webb has nailed the franchise on its head. Not only is the cast an improvement, but new technology and better special effects have put the Spider-Man franchise amongst the best of them, right alongside Marvel’s other character titles Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America.

It was obvious that the franchise was only going to get better, and we weren’t wrong. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has the same great qualities of Webb’s predecessor but is vamped up with vibrant colours and a number of ass-kicking villains. What I loved most about this sequel is that the new and improved Peter loves being Spider-Man, and with Garfield in the lead character, he has fun with everything he does. And it really shows. Nothing is done light-heartedly, and with the excellent direction of Webb behind him, Spider-Man is finally a hero we can all love.

And let’s not forget about the amazing chemistry Spidey has with real-life girlfriend Emma Stone. What a lovely couple they are, on screen as much as off. The sequel also sees new roles from the likes of the excellent Dane DeHaan, a favourite up and coming actor of mine, as well as the brilliant Jamie Foxx.

But not only is the sequel fun with many great action scenes, there’s also a few shockers and it does get a little emotional; just to show that the reboot has it all.
