Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell To Lead ‘True Detective’ Season 2

(Written for Filmoria)

HBO have made one of the most exciting announcements this week, with news officially confirming that Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell are set to lead the second series of True Detective.

HBO’s announcement also confirms that The Fast and Furious director Justin Lin is set to direct the first two episodes of the new season.

The new information may worry some viewers, as the producers have gone in a very different direction with lead actors who don’t often show their full potential and a more commercial director, but don’t worry yourselves just yet.

It would have been difficult for any actor to take over the leads of the first season, with the huge talents of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson being what attracted most of us to the series in the first place. But this is undoubtedly a great career move for both Farrell and Vaughn.

We may remember the actors for some of their worst film choices, but entering into a huge TV series such as this one means that we can expect a lot more from them than anything we have seen lately. And I’m sure they know that too. Think Vaughn in A Cool, Dry Place and Farrell in The New World; now there’s some serious acting that will kick the new series off at the right pace.

So what can we expect from the new series? Well fortunately we have the first official logline as well:

Three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.

Farrell will play one of the three cops, Ray Velcoro, whilst Vaughn will play the career criminal, Frank Semyon. Velcoro’s character is a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him, whilst Semyon is a mobster in danger of losing his empire as he tries to move into legitimate enterprise after the murder of a business partner.

The second of three cops, Paul Woodrugh, is expected to be played by Taylor Kitsch, whilst the third is the female lead, Ani Bezzerides.

But with all this news of these big stars joining the cast already, there’s still another female lead to be found, which is currently between eight actresses who were invited to read for creator Nic Pizzolatto last week: Rosario Dawson, Kelly Reilly, Jessica Biel, Malin Akerman, Abigail Spencer, Oona Chaplin, Jaimie Alexander and Brit Marling, with Rachel McAdams’ and Keira Knightley’s names also being often mentioned.

Confirmation on this final lead should be released soon, although you might also see a couple of these names confirmed for some of the smaller, supporting roles on the show, too.

Filming on the eight-episode season is set to begin this autumn in California, where the story takes place, and we’re already more than excited.
