The fourth installment in the Jurassic Park series, Jurassic World is a science fiction adventure directed by Colin Trevorrow. Set 22 years after the events of Jurassic Park, a new theme park has been built on the original site and is again set on the fictional island of Isla Nublar. Everything is going well under the control of Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard), who invites her nephews Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins) for a free trip. But when Claire is pushed by Masrani (Irrfan Khan) to create more scares and thrills, the park’s newest attraction – a genetically modified giant stealth killing machine, the Indominus Rex – doesn’t want to play nicely. When the dinosaur escapes containment and goes on a killing spree, the only hope of saving the island is dinosaur trainer Own (Chris Pratt).

Jurassic Park is a film that many of us grew up loving, and one that we’ve admired every year since. When news came that a sequel was in the works, it was only natural to feel a little cautious… But now that Jurassic World has become the third biggest grossing film of all time, I think we can well and truly put any doubts that we originally had aside. Who knew that it would be this good?
Whilst Jurassic Park remains a classic, it is a film that quickly aged, and that’s where many of the advantages of a modern-day sequel come in. There are still scenes in Jurassic Park that scare me to this day, but to quote Jurassic World itself:
Claire: Think this will scare the kids?
Masrani: The kids? This will give the parents nightmares.
The dinosaurs are bigger, their teeth are sharper, and the CGI is mind-blowingly impressive. And this is why a sequel needed to be made.
For a family film the violence is quite well controlled, although there was one scene that I found a little traumatising – involving a member of the public and a whale-like dinosaur thrashing her body around – since any attacks and gore were so well avoided beforehand. But it is a fantastic adventure all the same, and it plays great homage to the original throughout.
The characters are certainly less engaging, and even Chris Pratt didn’t make me swoon which was the biggest shocker of all, but he gives a fantastic performance nonetheless. It’s Bryce Dallas Howard who excels most of all, giving her career best performance alongside great performance from Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins.
With news that another sequel is in the books, I can’t wait to see more from the cast and to find out what adventure awaits next.
