With a lot of news flying around recently about the hopes of Channing Tatum playing the Marvel superhero Gambit, and the hype raised at Comic-Con earlier this year, disappointing news comes in that Tatum’s deal may be in danger of falling apart.
Earlier this week, The Wrap reported that Tatum is planning to exit the comic book project at 20th Century Fox.
It’s shocking news since Tatum seems as excited to play Gambit as Ryan Reynolds did about reprising his role as Deadpool, and the actor has been connected to the project since mid-2014.
According to The Wrap, Tatum isn’t out yet as “reps are still in active discussions with the studio but acknowledged that ‘something is up.’”
The Wrap also speculates that Tatum’s “larger ambitions” to direct may have something to do with the decision, with Tatum reported to be gearing up to co-direct Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock with Gambit co-producer Reid Carolin.
Director Rupert Wyatt planned to start shooting the film in October, so confirmation on these rumours will have to be given soon, and a replacement found pretty swiftly if this is the case.
If worst comes to worst, who would you want to replace Channing Tatum as Gambit?
