Remakes

Dad’s Army (5th Feb)

Based on the BBC television sitcom Dad’s Army, and directed by Oliver Parker, the film is set in 1944, after the events depicted in the television series. The Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard platoon deal with a visiting female journalist (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and a German spy as World War II draws to its conclusion. The film has an excellent cast list including Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon, Toby Jones, and Blake Harrison.

Point Break (12th Feb)

A film that is receiving a lot of criticism already, Point Break is a remake of the 1991 film that starred Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. This time with Luke Bracey in the lead as Utah, a young FBI agent infiltrates an extraordinary team of extreme sports athletes he suspects of masterminding a string of unprecedented, sophisticated corporate heists. Directed by Ericson Core, the film also stars Édgar Ramírez, Teresa Palmer, and Ray Winstone.

Ghostbusters (15th July)

One of this year’s most controversial remakes, 2016 sees a female-led cast of Ghostbusters. Directed by Paul Feig, it stars Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Chris Hemsworth, Neil Casey and Andy García. The plot is unknown at this time.

Pete’s Dragon (12th Aug)

Remake of the 1977 classic children’s film, based on a short story by S.S. Field and Seton I. Miller, Pete’s Dragon is directed by David Lowery and follows a young orphan (Oakes Fegley) who seeks refuge from his abusive adoptive parents with the help of a pet dragon and a couple who live in a lighthouse. The film also stars Oona Laurence, Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard, Wes Bentley and Karl Urban.

Ben-Hur (26th Aug)

Another remake we didn’t see coming is of the 1925 and 1959 films of the same name, which in turn are based on the 1880 novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ by Lew Wallace. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, the film stars Jack Huston, Morgan Freeman, Toby Kebbell, Nazanin Boniadi and Rodrigo Santoro. The story follows a falsely accused nobleman survives years of slavery to take vengeance on his best friend who betrayed him.

The Magnificent Seven (23rd Sep)

A remake of the 1960 western film of the same name, which is, in turn, a remake of the 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven follows seven gunmen in the old west gradually come together to help a poor village against savage thieves. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Luke Grimes, Wagner Moura, Haley Bennett, Matt Bomer, and Peter Sarsgaard.

Cabin Fever (TBC)

A remake that seems somewhat pointless is that of Eli Roth‘s 2002 film of the same name, who is producing this remake using the same script but with new characters. The story follows a group of five friends who are terrorized at their getaway cabin. Directed by Travis Zariwny, it will star Gage Golightly, Matthew Daddario, and Nadine Crocker.
