The fifth instalment in the DC Extended Universe, following on from 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League sees Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) recruit The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) after the selfless death of Superman (Henry Cavill) to restore faith in a now very down-beaten humanity. Directed by Zack Snyder, the team must face an even great enemy as they must save the world from the catastrophic threat of Steppenwolf (voiced by Ciarán Hinds) and his army of Parademons.

After the somewhat disappointing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, I think we all expected this to be a step up. But nope. It’s very much just as bad for exactly the same reasons.
The film shows a lot of promise in its opening few scenes. Gotham looks brilliant, Affleck suits his role, there’s a brilliant opening credits scene featuring Sigrid’s Everybody Knows, and then we meet Jason Momoa – yum! But from that point on, it’s just so dull!
Not only does DC’s latest suffer from awful villain syndrome yet again, but the characters just didn’t come together well at all. Whilst I’m still super excited for some of their standalone character films, their character here just aren’t developed well enough.
I enjoy all of the characters individually – Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman (the only relatively decent film in the universe so far) is inspiring, Ezra Miller is an amazing actor and adds some much-needed humour as Flash, Jason Momoa is perfectly cast as Aquaman (let’s get his character film on the go NOW!) and Ray Fisher is a great addition as Cyborg.
But they just aren’t given the screen time that they need. Ben Affleck has done well in the role as Batman so far but he is so underused in this film, and Superman needed to be brought back a lot sooner, whilst Henry Cavill needs to be given a much better shot at making the role work for him. Together, there was just no stand out moment for any of them.
There were a few scenes that I did enjoy, but the scenes that should have made an impact didn’t. I know we shouldn’t compare DC to Marvel but, with the Avengers films, everything seems so significant and important and exciting. Marvel’s films show that the world needs The Avengers and that people are relying on them, but the Justice League forming felt like there was something better going on a little farther down the street and that humanity really didn’t benefit from them “saving the world” in the slightest.
Sadly, when it all comes down to it, Justice League is – yet again – another forgettable film from DC, leaving us with nothing more to look forward to from the franchise.
