Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the second instalment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, following 2015’s The Force Awakens, and is the eighth episode of the franchise. The plot follows Rey (Daisy Ridley) as she receives Jedi training from Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), in hopes of turning the tide for the Resistance in the fight against Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and the First Order. Meanwhile, the Resistance – General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) – attempt to escape a First Order attack.
Rating:
Two years since the brilliant return to the franchise and after two whole years of fan theories to two of the biggest questions left from Episode VII, we are finally given the answers with this latest instalment in the Star Wars saga.
And maybe that’s why I was left somewhat disappointed by this film, because the answers to both of those questions are kind of a kick in the teeth.
Rian Johnson is an excellent director, but I just wasn’t excited by this instalment as I was with Episode VII. I have a lot of love for the cast and there some standout moments, but it just didn’t do it for me.
I’m still giving the film four stars because I did enjoy it, but there will be many other Episodes that I will put on before rewatching this one.
