Film Review: Crazy Rich Asians

Directed by Jon M. Chu and based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians is a contemporary romantic comedy that follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend , Nick (Henry Golding), to attend his best friend’s wedding and to meet his family. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time, Rachel is surprised to discover that Nick’s family are among the richest in Singapore and that he is one of its most sought-after bachelors. Having to face jealous socialites and Nick’s own disapproving mother (Michelle Yeoh), it soon becomes clear that while money can’t buy love, it can definitely complicate things.

I have and will never know money like this, but it’s amazing to see into the lives of the filthy rich and also of a contemporary Asia.

With constantly beautiful locations and set pieces, Crazy Rich Asians is fun, funny, romantic, and also very emotional. I cried for the final 20 minutes of the film, but I was eager to watch it all over again straight afterwards.

Admittedly, I haven’t watched many Asian actor-led films before – certainly not a rom-com, anyway – but this is definitely one of the best modern films in its genre and the cast is absolutely superb.

Constance Wu and Henry Golding make great leads, and who better to play the superior head of the family than Michelle Yeoh?! But the supporting cast is just as good with the likes of Gemma Chan and Awkwafina who are both excellent.

I can’t believe I missed out on all the hype around this film when it was released, but this is definitely a film that I need to own.
