The fifth series of Line of Duty, created by Jed Mercurio, consisted of six episodes and began airing in March 2019 on BBC One. The series follows the actions of AC12 – Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), D.I. Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and D.S. Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) – as they investigate an Organised Crime Group with links to missing undercover officer D.S. John Corbett (Stephen Graham).

Season Five of Line of Duty may not be as gritty or gripping as its previous seasons, but it’s what they’ve been leading up to. Who is H? And can we trust Hastings?
Becoming the highest-rated drama of the year so far, this season enables us to see an AC-12 investigation from the side of the criminals. With even more twists and turns, undercover cops, bent coppers and shock revelations than ever before, it’s no wonder that this has become one of the UK’s best series.

The problem is that there’s not enough of D.I. Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and D.S. Steve Arnott (Martin Compston), as the investigation of Hastings is taken over and they are forced to tack a step back. However, Stephen Graham makes an excellent addition as his character hovers over the edge of what a copper can do in the name of being undercover and what actions there are no coming back from.
The last episode is an example of great acting and writing but it is very complicated to follow because of all the jargon. Nevertheless, it leaves the series on a high and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
