Book Review: The Dare by Lesley Kara

“As a child, it was just a game. As an adult, it was a living nightmare.”

Set to be released on 18th February, The Dare by Lesley Kara follows teenage friends Lizzie and Alice who decide to head off for a walk in the countryside, blissfully unaware that this will be their final day together – and that only Lizzie will come back alive. Lizzie has no memory of what happened in the moments before Alice died, she only knows that it must have been a tragic accident. But as she tries to cope with her grief, she is shocked to find herself alienated from Alice’s friends and relatives. They are convinced she somehow had a part to play in her friend’s death. Twelve years later, unpacking boxes in the new home she shares with her fiancé, Lizzie is horrified to find traumatic memories and paranoia suddenly surfacing. Is the trauma of the accident finally catching up with her, or could someone be trying to threaten her new-found happiness? Twelve years is a long time to wait when you’re planning the perfect revenge…

Thank you to NetGalley for a free advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

An intriguing page-turner, The Dare is a compelling psychological thriller that absorbs you into the life of these two young girls and the secrets that have haunted Lizzie and her family for the whole of their lives.

The structure of the book works like a jigsaw through multiple viewpoints. Told in the present, the past before the accident and the past after the accident, Kara brilliantly weaves together these narratives to slowly reveal the truth about what happened on that day on the train tracks and who is messing with Lizzie’s head.

Well-developed and full of tension, the twists will shock and the suspense will have you on the edge of your seat. And because the characters are all so engaging, you really feel the pressure of the secrets that are bubbling to the surface. Alice and Lizzie are both likeable characters and you can certainly feel the power of their bond, which is what makes you all the more desperate to find out what’s going on.

It’s definitely a book that I’m going to be thinking about for a while. The Dare is an entertaining thriller that keeps your attention and ends with a satisfying conclusion. I can’t wait to read more by Lesley Kara and be lured into another twisty story.
