Book Review: Just Like The Other Girls by Claire Douglas

“CARER/COMPANION WANTED FOR ELDERLY LADY / YOUNG FEMALE PREFERRED / COMPETITIVE SALARY / ROOM AND BOARD INCLUDED”

Published in 2020, Just Like The Other Girls by Claire Douglas follows Una Richardson who, seeking a place to heal after the death of her mother, responds to an advertisement and steps into the rich, comforting world of Elspeth McKenzie. But Elspeth’s home is not as safe as it seems. Kathryn, her cold and bitter daughter, resents Una’s presence. But more disturbing is the realization that two girls had lived here before. Two girls who ended up dead. As the walls close in around her, Una starts to fear that she will end up just like the other girls…

Rating:

With a sinister and creepy atmosphere, Just Like The Other Girls is an addictive and ferocious psychological thriller that you’ll want to read in one sitting.

I don’t know why I went into this book with low expectations. I haven’t read anything by Claire Douglas before or seen any reviews for this book around, so I didn’t know what to expect. But I wanted to fit one more book in before the end of the month, so I thought it would be an easy read to fill some reading time.

As it turns out, this was such a fun read! There are so many great twists, and I didn’t guess any of what was happening. Douglas’s writing is sharp, her plotting is clever, and her characterisation is brilliant. I enjoyed all of the characters and Douglas really gets your suspicions building.

This book genuinely surprised me and I’m so glad that I picked it up. I will definitely be excited to read more by Claire Douglas in the future.
