Book Review: My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing

“Every marriage has secrets. Everyone has flaws. Your wife isn’t perfect – you know that – but then again nor are you.”

Published in 2019, My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing follows the lives of a married couple as a serial killer is on the loose in their small town, preying on young women. Fear is driving their well-behaved daughter off the rails, as both husband and wife find themselves in bed late at night, looking at the person who lies asleep beside them. Because they thought they knew the worst about each other. The truth is, they know nothing at all.

Rating:

“This is a thriller like nothing you’ve read before…”. Ha! I’ve read so many thrillers, I find that unlikely…

Okay, so, this is definitely unlike any other thriller that I’ve read before. Sure, it plays on some cliched thriller tropes to set its foundations, but My Lovely Wife stands out all on its own.

I’ve been waiting for a thriller to grip me from the start and wow, did this one quickly grab my attention. With crazy twists from the very beginning, My Lovely Wife will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final page. And even then, the intense ending will have you so hyped up that you’ll instantly want to pick up another book by Samantha Downing.

It’s no surprise that this thriller comes so widely recommended. I wouldn’t say that it’s a dark or particularly groundbreaking thriller, but it is fast-paced and full of exciting twists, and I loved every minute of it.

I especially enjoyed how Downing explored the emotions of every family member and how this situation was affecting them all individually. Her characters are all well-developed and engaging, which is what makes all the twists come even more as a shock. And while I did guess how a lot of it was going to play out, the revelations still made me evil laugh out loud in sheer excitement.

Personally, I would have liked it to be more gruesome and chilling for me to give it a full five stars, but My Lovely Wife was exactly the book I needed to get me out of a slump. So if you haven’t got to this one already, I’d definitely recommend that you pick it up as you’re sure to have a lot of fun with it.
