Book Review: Watch Her Fall by Erin Kelly

“The higher you rise, the further you fall.”

Published in 2021, Watch Her Fall by Erin Kelly follows Ava Kirilova who has reached the very top of her profession. After years and years of hard graft, pain and sacrifice as part of the London Russian Ballet Company, allowing nothing else to distract her, she is finally the poster girl for Swan Lake. Even Mr K – her father, and the intense, terrifying director of the company – can find no fault. Ava has pushed herself ahead of countless other talented, hardworking girls, and they are all watching her now.

Dancers would kill for the part. But there is someone who really wants to see Ava fall.

Rating:

With a fascinating concept set in the dominating and somewhat sinister world of ballet, Watch Her Fall is a complex and clever mystery thriller.

Full of atmosphere and the intensity of an elite dance school, there are so many brilliant twists which continuously surprised me.

I was a little hesitant in the middle of the book as I thought the story was going off on a tangent that I wasn’t enjoying. I wish the story had a better fluidity to it as this could have been a five-star read for me otherwise, but it soon got back to the world of ballet and pulled me right back in.

By the end, I loved how original, dark, tense, and immersive this thriller was.
