Film Review: The Hateful Eight
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, serving as his eighth feature film, The Hateful Eight opens with a stagecoach hurtling through a wintry Wyoming landscape. Onboard are the “The Hangman” John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive “The Prisoner” Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who are heading towards the town of Red Rock to bring Domergue to justice.
On their way they encounter two strangers, “The Bounty Hunter” Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson) and “The Sheriff” Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), and must seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass, on account of a terrible storm. Here, the passengers meet four strangers, “The Mexican” Bob (Demián Bichir), “The Little Man” Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), “The Cow Puncher” Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and “The Confederate” General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm grows bigger, the eight travellers come to learn that they may not make it to Red Rock after all…

Film Review: Side Effects
Rating:
Serving as Steven Soderbergh’s final film, Side Effects is a psychological thriller that reunites the director with his Contagion screenwriter Scott Z. Burns. Following a troubled young woman named Emily (Rooney Mara), the film looks at the unexpected side effects that prescribed drugs can have, as Emily is prescribed Ablixa by her psychiatrist (Jude Law), a drug intended to treat anxiety but one that has a surprising effect on her relationship with her newly paroled husband Martin (Channing Tatum). As Emily’s world slowly unravels, is everything as simple as it originally seems, or are there more side effects to be uncovered?

Film Review: Magic Mike
(Published in Issue 12 of my publication In Retrospect)
Rating:
If you’re in the small minority of the female population that hasn’t been reading E. L. James‘ 50 Shades of Grey this month, then you’ve probably been watching this. Magic Mike, directed by Steven Soderbergh, follows male stripper Magic Mike (Channing Tatum) who teaches a younger performer, teenage drop-out Adam (Alex Pettyfer), how to party, pick up women, and make easy money.
From the director that brought us the Oceans trilogy and thrillers including the fairly recent Contagion and Haywire, Magic Mike is certainly an odd direction for Soderbergh to take. Fortunately, his experience means that there is still something to watch and enjoy when there are no half-naked men stripping.
