DVD Review: Jack The Giant Slayer

From director Bryan Singer and the latest in a series of fairy tale retellings, Jack the Giant Slayer follows the story of a Jack (Nicholas Hoult), a young farmhand who volunteers to fight for his kingdom, to ultimately win the love of a princess (Eleanor Tomlinson), after he mistakenly opens a gateway between his world and the world of the fearsome giants, reigniting an ancient war. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, Jack is faced with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend, as they strive to reclaim the land they once lost.

Film Review: Snow White And The Huntsman

Directed by Rupert Sanders, Snow White And The Huntsman is the latest in a series of childhood fairytale re-imaginings. Based on the classic Brothers Grimm tale Snow White and The Seven Dwarves, the film follows the story of a Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) who is ordered to find and kill the princess of the realm, Snow White (Kristen Stewart), who has run into the haunted woods after escaping being locked up by the Evil Queen (Charlize Theron), a sorceress whose dark magic has immersed the kingdom into complete despair. The Huntsman, however, finds himself becoming Snow White’s protector, as they meet seven dwarves on their quest through the forest and begin to conspire a plan to defeat the Evil Queen for good.

Featuring the three characters depicted in the new posters as the film’s lead, Snow White And The Huntsman follows a Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) who is ordered to take Snow White (Kristen Stewart) into the woods to kill her, but who winds up becoming her protector in a quest to defeat the Evil Queen (Charlize Theron).

A new international poster for Rupert Sanders’ Snow White And The Huntsman has been released this week.

Adding itself to the top of the already highly piled-up collection of promotional releases, it’s likely that you’ve already been impressed from the number of trailers and new images for this film recently, so you’ve probably made up your mind on this epic and dark twist on the classic fairytale. The new poster, however, is pretty decent and will only further flourish your expectations.

Following Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland and Catherine Hardwicke‘s Red Riding Hood, Mirror Mirror is the latest in a series of childhood fairytale re-imaginings which is directed by Tarsem Singh. Based on the classic Brothers Grimm tale Snow White and The Seven Dwarves, the film follows The Evil Queen (Julia Roberts) who, having stolen control of a kingdom, exiles the princess Snow White (Lily Collins) into the woods and orders her to be killed. Set free and told to never return home, Snow White enlists the help of seven dwarves, determined to win back her birthright and free her Prince Charming (Armie Hammer) from The Evil Queen’s spell.

A brilliant new trailer has been released for Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman this week. Showing the darkest side to the film yet, the new trailer shows off a lot of new footage, contrasting scenes of war, monstrous creatures and the magical depths of the forest.

Saoirse Ronan to Lead ‘The Order of the Seven’

Saoirse Ronan is set to lead Walt Disney’s The Order of the Seven, it has been reported this week.

Formerly titled Snow and the Seven, the film was originally planned to be a re-telling of the fairytale classic Snow White And The Seven Dwarves that, set in 19th Century China, would deal with an English woman who is protected by a band of international warriors.

We have seen a number of re-imaginations of children’s fairytales lately, with Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland in 2010 and Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood in 2011, and we can expect to see many more classics being retold in a darker context over the next couple of years, including Mirror Mirror: The Untold Adventures of Snow White and Snow White and the Huntsman in 2012, and in 2013 with Jack The Giant Killer and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.

Warner Bros. have released the first trailer for Bryan Singer’s take on the children’s fairytale, Jack And The Beanstalk, today, and a new poster was quick to follow.

Jack The Giant Killer follows the classic story of a boy named Jack (Nicholas Hoult) who swaps his cow for a handful of magical beans, consequently opening up the gate between the world of humans with the world of the giants when the beans grow into a ginormous beanstalk. Of course, like the many other fairytale re-imaginings that are being released and filmed at the minute, there is a darker, more adult twist for the film, as Jack is forced to go on a mission to rescue Princess Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson).

Will Kristen Stewart Make a Wet Snow White?

Earlier this week we saw Kristen Stewart all armoured up for her role in Snow White And The Huntsman. Today, even more photographs were put online, showing Stewart getting a bit wet on set for Universal Pictures whilst filming in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

It was announced that the Twilight star was given the role of Snow White earlier this year. The film, which is directed by Rupert Sanders, is a twist to the classic fairytale following a Huntsman who is ordered to take Snow White into the woods to be killed but who winds up becoming her protector in a quest to defeat the Evil Queen.

Red Riding Hood Love Triangle

A while ago, I posted about a series of ‘Not-So-Childish Fairytales’ with the release of Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke‘s more adult adaptation of the fairytale classic Red Riding Hood, staring Amanda Seyfried, which is set to be released on DVD and Blu-ray next week on 14th June.

Not-So-Childish Fairytales

With two of the most recent films being advertised on TV at the minute, it seems that everyone is having a shot at taking a famed fairytale and putting an adult twist on it to make it their own.

Red Riding Hood, currently being shown in UK cinemas, is based on the classic Little Red Riding Hood. Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter. Directed by Twilight’s Catherine Hardwicke, Red Riding Hood follows a very similar storyline to Bella Swan’s vampire/werewolf love triangle. Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) is torn between two men; she is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Max Irons). But which is the feared werewolf that threatens the village?
