Film Review: Spider-Man 2: Far From Home

Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Far From Home is the sequel to 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and the twenty-third film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film sees Tom Holland return as the web-slinging Peter Parker as he decides to join his best friends – Ned (Jacob Batalon), MJ (Zendaya), and Betty (Angourie Rice) – on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks that are creating havoc across the continent.

Film Review: Avengers – Endgame

The 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the fourth Avengers film, following on from last year’s Infinity War and once again directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Endgame picks up with the surviving members of the Avengers and their allies – including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Nebula (Karen Gillan), and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) – as they must work together to reverse the damage caused by Thanos (Josh Brolin). and restore order to the universe once and for all, no matter what consequences may be in store.

Film Review: Captain Marvel

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel is the twenty-first film in the MCU and the first female standalone film in the franchise. The story is set in the 1990s and follows Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. When Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races, Danvers meets S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as she must convince them of a threat which is far beyond anything that S.H.I.E.L.D. has ever experienced before.

Film Review: Ant-Man and The Wasp

Directed by Peyton Reed and the 20th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Ant-Man and The Wasp follows Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) as he struggles to balance being both a superhero and a father, despite being confined to his home after being placed under house arrest after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Meanwhile, Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and Dr Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) continue with their urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.

Film Review: Deadpool 2

The 11th instalment in the X-Men film series and the sequel to 2016’s hugely successful superhero film, Deadpool 2, directed by David Leitch, follows the foul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), who brings together a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with supernatural abilities (Julian Dennison) from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg, Cable (Josh Brolin).

Film Review: Avengers – Infinity War

The third Avengers ensemble film and the nineteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Infinity War sees The Avengers – Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Vision (Paul Bettany), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) – and The Guardians of the Galaxy – Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) – come together for the ultimate, deadliest showdown of all time.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, these new superhero allies have to sacrifice everything in an attempt to prevent the powerful Thanos (Josh Brolin) from amassing the all-powerful Infinity Stones before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.

Film Review: Black Panther

The eighteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and directed by Ryan Coogler, Black Panther picks up after the events of Captain America: Civil War when T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), heir to the hidden but technologically advanced kingdom of Wakanda, must step forward as King to lead his people into a new future. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict with Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.

Film Review: Thor – Ragnarok

Directed by Taika Waititi, the third instalment in Marvel’s Thor films, Thor: Ragnarok, sees the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) return after being banished by his long-lost goth sister, Hela (Cate Blanchett). Imprisoned on the planet Sakaar, which is ruled over by camp tyrant Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), Thor is pitted against the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) in a gladiatorial contest. But, with the help of his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and a defender of Asgard, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), his priority is to return home to save it from of the prophesised catastrophe of Ragnarok.

Film Review: Spider-Man – Homecoming

The second Spider-Man film reboot and the sixteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Spider-Man: Homecoming, directed by Jon Watts, sees Tom Holland take the lead as a young Peter Parker who begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging superhero. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home to Queens, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). He tries to fall back into his normal daily routine, until the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain.

Film Review: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Directed once again by James Gunn, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 sees the return of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), and Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos and must fight to keep their newfound family together. Set to the backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, old foes become new allies as the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage is revealed when they meet his father, Ego (Kurt Russell).

Film Review: Logan

The tenth film in the X-Men film series and the third and final instalment in the Wolverine trilogy, Logan, directed by James Mangold, is set in 2029 in alternate bleak future where mutants are nearly all gone, as it follows an aged and isolated Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and his only companions, the outcast Caliban (Stephen Merchant) and an extremely ill Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) whose singular mind is plagued by worsening seizures. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy abruptly end when a mysterious woman appears with an urgent request: that Logan shepherd an extraordinary young mutant girl, Laura (Dafne Keen), to safety, as they must escape the capture of the villainous Reavers, led by Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook) and Zander Rice (Richard E. Grant).

Film Review: Doctor Strange

Directed by Scott Derrickson, Doctor Strange is the fourteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It follows a brilliant but arrogant surgeon named Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) who, after his career is destroyed, goes on a journey of physical and spiritual healing. Under the tutelage of a mystic known as the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), Doctor Strange is drawn into the world of the mystic arts, as he trains to become a powerful sorcerer. Taught to defend the world against evil, he soon finds himself facing one of the Ancient One’s former students, Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen).

Film Review: X-Men – Apocalypse

The ninth instalment in the X-Men film series, following on from 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, and again directed by Bryan Singer, X-Men: Apocalypse is set in 1983 when the first and most powerful mutant, En Sabah Nur a.k.a. Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), awakens after thousands of years. Amassed with the powers of many other mutants, which has enabled him to become both immortal and invincible, Apocalypse plans to wipe out modern civilisation and take over the world, and recruits a team of powerful mutants – including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Angel (Ben Hardy), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), and Psylocke (Olivia Munn) – to help him cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Professor X (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters), return to lead a team of young X-Men – including Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) – to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

Film Review: Captain America 3 – Civil War

The 13th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: Civil War follows on from the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron as a rift forms in the Avengers team after political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability when another incident results in collateral damage. When the new status quo fractures the team, the Avengers split into two camps – one led by Captain America (Chris Evans) and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other led by Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), following his surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability – causing an epic battle between former allies.

Film Review: Deadpool

Marvel‘s first release of 2016, and the eighth installment in the X-Men series, directed by Tim Miller, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), who, diagnosed with terminal cancer and willing to do anything to spend more time with his fiance, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), undergoes a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers. Thus, he adopts the alter ego, Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humour, Deadpool hunts down Francis Freeman a.k.a. Ajax (Ed Skrein), the man who nearly destroyed his life, and his sidekick Angel Dust (Gina Carano), alongside fellow X-Men Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and Colossus (voiced by Stefan Kapičić).

100 Films To Look Forward To In 2016

2015 has ended on a high with the likes of Star Wars – Episode VII: The Force Awakens reminding us exactly why we love film and how waiting a whole year for a release can pay off. But now it’s time to look forward to what the new year has to come, with my list of 100 films to look forward to in 2016.

Not only are there plenty of sequels from some of the most recently successful films set to be released, but there’s a handful of films that we’ve been waiting years to see, and some we thought weren’t even an option. From adaptations of mobile phone games, book adaptations that could fill a library, to some of DC and Marvel’s most anticipated superhero origin stories and collaborative war efforts, 2016 is going to be big, and there’s a lot of anticipated releases heading our way.

The 12th instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing an end to Phase Two, Ant-Man is directed by Peyton Reed, with a screenplay by Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish, Adam McKay, and Paul Rudd. Armed with a suit with the enables the ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, cat burglar Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and begin to live a life that his daughter will look up to. With the help of his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and toughened up by Pym’s daughter, Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Scott must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world from a new generation of towering threats.

Film Review: Avengers – Age of Ultron

Sequel to 2012’s Avengers Assemble and the eleventh installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Age of Ultron, directed by Joss Whedon, picks up with our favourite superhero team. When Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) jumpstarts a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry, calling for the need of The Avengers once again, bringing back together Iron Man, Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). To save the planet from destruction at the hands of the villainous Ultron (voiced by James Spader), The Avengers are put to the ultimate test.
