Film Review: Little Ashes

“Remember me when you are at the beach, and above all when you paint crackling things and little ashes. Oh, my little ashes! Put my name in the picture so that my name will serve for something in the world.” – Federico Lorca to Salvador Dali.

Rating:

Directed by Paul Morrison, Little Ashes explores the young lives and friendship of surrealist artist Salvador Dalí (Robert Pattinson), filmmaker Luis Bunuel (Matthew McNulty) and writer Federico García Lorca (Javier Beltran). Set in 1922, Spain was dominated by the army and conservative morality invaded every sphere of life: social, artistic and sexual.

As the film opens, Salvador Dali is 18 years old and beginning university in Madrid. Wearing a frilly shirt and a pointy hat with a centre parting in his long hair, he steps out of his carriage into a crowd of suited and clean-cut men. He stood out from the crowd and behaved in an eccentric manner to draw attention to himself which was reflected in his work, creating a new genre of surrealism.

Robert Pattinson’s Earlier & Upcoming Films

We all know the Robert Pattinson of the Twilight Saga which began in 2008. The Edward Cullen that teenage girls drool over (I being one of them). But I’m much more interested in his roles in other work. His lead role as Tyler Hawkins in Remember Me, released on DVD this week, a heartbreaking tale of love and family relationships. His appearance, and death, as Cedric Diggory in the even more popular Harry Potter (And The Goblet of Fire) franchise in 2005. So I decided to do a little research into other films he has been in, or is currently in production of, to set myself, and possibly others, a small playlist of films to watch over the summer.

Film Review: The Twilight Saga 3 – Eclipse

From Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga, the third film adaptation from her novel collection, Eclipse, is directed by David Slade, who has already dabbled in the vampire franchise with 30 Days of Night. Eclipse, living up to the Saga’s bad criticisms, churns morals to its younger audience and disappoints with changes from the original film and cast. But it’s not that bad, it’s just not one to charm its haters.

Eclipse follows the story of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) who must finally choose between her glittering vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and werewolf phasing best friend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) as the two most important people in her life must work together to fight and protect her as an army of vampires form to destroy the Cullen family.

Film Review: Remember Me

Rating:

Remember Me follows 21-year-old Tyler Hawkins (Robert Pattinson), a typical university student living in New York. We are introduced to his character as either holding a bottle of beer or having a cigarette in his hand, with the characters around him constantly remarking on the smell of alcohol and smoke and of his ghost-like presence. It’s not until we learn about the death of Tyler’s brother that we understand his behaviour and unsociable nature. There is a lot of emotion behind Pattinson’s acting which makes it easy to relate to his character. We can see that he’s only set out to make a difference but is full of anger because of the injustice and ignorance of the people around him.

Film Review: The Twilight Saga 2: New Moon

Subsequently delving into the history of the Quileutes, Bella discovers the secrets of Jacob’s tribe while looking forward to a reunion with Edward that may have deadly consequences.

Film Review: The Twilight Saga 1: Twilight

Based on Stephenie Meyer‘s novel of the same name and directed by Catherine Hardwicke, Twilight follows high-school student Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), who moves from sunny Arizona to the perpetually overcast town of Forks in Washington. There, she meets Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a handsome but mysterious teen who has a secret. Edward is a vampire. His family don’t drink blood, but Bella’s scent inspires a nearly-impossible-to-harness bloodlust in Edward. Far from being frightened, the two enter into a dangerous romance. Things go relatively smoothly until a visiting vampire clan – consisting of James (Cam Gigandet), Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre), and Laurent (Edi Gathegi) – catches Bella’s unique scent and threatens the young couple’s future together.
