DVD Review: The Lobster

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, The Lobster is set in a dystopian near future, where single people, according to the law, are taken to a hotel where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in 45 days, or else they are transformed into an animal of their own choice and sent off into the woods.

The film follows David (Colin Farrell), who enters the hotel with his brother, a dog, after his wife leaves him for another man.

The Lobster is certainly a strange film and it won’t be for everybody, but there will be a large handful of people, like me, who love this film for all of its eccentricities and curiosities.

The near dystopian future is captured brilliantly, and whilst the fantasy world has many impossibilities, it feels quite close to home at the same time. Although it’s dark at times, as well, The Lobster is also hilariously funny when it really shouldn’t be.

From Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, serving as his English-language feature film debut, the language and narrative style used are so simple yet so complex at the same time, as if Lanthimos really understands what it is to be human without having to make the story and its characters over-complicated.

The characters are crafted incredibly, and the performances are all superb. Not only does Farrell give one his rare exceptional performances, there’s fantastic support from Rachel Weisz, Léa Seydoux, John C. Reilly, Ben Whishaw, Olivia Colman, Ashley Jensen, and Jessica Barden, as well.

Lanthimo really knew what he was doing with this film, and whilst it may not appeal to a large audience, it will be seen as a real delight to those it resonates with.

The Lobster is set to be released on DVD on 8th February.
