Following a premise which feels more and more apt in our increasingly backwards world, Noughts + Crosses is an original young adult [sort of] dystopia, exploring an alternative present-day in a way that we haven’t experienced before. As an example of speculative fiction with the reversal of skin colour, it’s a fresh, likeable and contemporary series to get excited about.
It may not be subtle, but it makes you notice certain acts or views regarding colour that you wouldn’t normally realise because of your own privileges, which was interesting to see from another point of view. It gives a very balanced view, as well, avoiding condemning either side’s attitudes or behaviours, yet still having powerful messages that resonate.
With a great young cast, as well as a cameo from Stormzy, Jack Rowan (who was just as brilliant in Born To Kill) absolutely shines. I want to see him in a lot more after this.
