TV Series About ‘Braveheart’ Hero William Wallace In Development

(Written for BritScene)

A scripted drama series based on the legendary Scottish knight, William Wallace, is in development, it has been announced this week.

Portrayed by American actor Mel Gibson in the 1995 Oscar-winning film Braveheart, the TV biopic will focus on Wallace’s years spent trying to unify Scotland as well as his loves and losses and his legendary battles with King Edward the Longshank and rival Robert the Bruce.

Titled Wallace, the project is being run by STV Productions, Digital Rights Group, Nine/8 Entertainment, and Creative Media, with Mick Davis (The Eleventh Hour) set to scribe.

“This was a turbulent time in Scotland’s history, in which William Wallace had a starring and pivotal role,” said executive producer from STV Productions, Alan Clements, in the recent statement announcing the news. “We plan to delve deep into his character and explore his passions, bringing parts of history to life in a spectacular and raw depiction. With all eyes on Scotland in the current political climate, this also seems to be a very appropriate time to tell this story in more depth.”

Based on the original idea from Kent Dalian and Seoras Wallace, an adviser on Braveheart, Creative Media’s Todd Berger will executive produce alongside Andrew Trapani and Brian Gilbert of Nine/8 Entertainment, with Clements and Margaret Enefer to executive produce for STV Productions and Creative Scotland to invest through the Development Fund agreed with STV in 2011.

We will keep a close eye on this one for you.
